Step Back From Confusion Until You Reach Clarity

Creating a new business online or bringing an existing business venture to the web for the first time – there is a LOT to learn and do.

I remember getting started back in early 2002.  Everything was so exciting!  There was much to learn and many people to learn from.

Author Frank Herbert said, “The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.

I was discovering something I didn’t understand just about every day!  Just when I thought I was coming close to understanding what I needed to do, a seminar call would introduce me to something else I needed to gain some understanding about. Soon I realized – it never ends!

Information Overload Creates Confusion

There comes a point where you have so much information flying at you and around you that you can’t possibly assimilate it, let alone put it into action in any practical way.

What did I do?  I purposefully stepped back from the flow of information.  I unsubscribed from most of the guru mailing lists  I had joined and I stopped signing up for every new teleseminar series being offered.  I quit buying new information products and set about the business of consuming what I already had on my computer.

Immediately I felt more in control.  As I studied the resources I had at my disposal, I gained clarity about the action steps to take in my business.

You Don’t Start Out At Long Division

Think about how our kids learn math in school.  They learn to identify numbers, then they learn to count. Then simple addition and subtraction.  Down the road they’ll tackle long division, fractions, algebra and so on.

Some of us are trying to practice geometry when we don’t really have the basics mastered yet.  Is it any wonder that we end up confused?

Poet Anatole France said, “It is better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.

Is that awesome or what?  We should never feel bad about taking things one step at a time and never worry that we’re learning things ‘too slow’.   This isn’t a race – the fastest to launch isn’t always the most profitable in the long run.

Learn, Evaluate, Do, Review. Next!

Instead of trying to give your best impression of a Kirby Vacuum cleaner – sucking up everything in your path – take in all that you can about one topic and concentrate on putting that one thing into action.  Take some time to see how it’s working and determine if you need to tweak and adjust.  Stay in that place until it comes as easy as cake – then you can move on with confidence!

I know many marketers who have become so entranced by learning that they never DO.  I had a conversation recently with a gal who has been ‘learning the ropes’ for over fives years and who finally feels ready to tackle something.    Honestly, I don’t believe that she will :(   She’ll discover some new thing and convince herself that she should focus on learning about it before getting in to deep with a business of her own. The cycle will repeat literally forever.

Here’s one more fantastic quote for you…

Coach John Wooden said, “Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

If you want to be an online business owner – you’ve got to DO.

If you’re in a state of confusion right now, step back until you find one thing you can do with completely clarity.  Do it and do it and do it!

If you’re so far into the fog that you can’t find your way free, I invite you to join me here at Mom Masterminds.  Choose my One on One coaching plan and I’ll help you find your way back to clarity and then help you decide where to go from there to build the business you really want.

Clarity Over Confusion was the topic of our Monday Morning Breakthrough Session this week.  MM Members can listen to the recording in our Learning Center!

  • Well put, Kelly. I think we all get to the information overload point eventually. There are just so many resources out there. The key is to pick one model and stick with it. And you're right, Mom Masterminds is a great place to start. I know it's helped me!

    Hi Kelly.

This weeks Monday Morning Breakthrough helped me a LOT. I'll be talking to you about it in a few moments when I have my coaching session with you :-) Just needed to read all the words of wisdom again here. I love every quote.

I realise I am not a huge multitasker when it comes to this kind of learning and it is a slower process for me than I expected it would be and I'm BECOMING okay with that.

Thanks for all the help you are giving me.

What a great post, Kelly, and very timely. Your words of wisdom helped to confirm that I am on the right track. A little over a week ago I went through and unsubscribed from several lists, as my inbox was becoming overwhelming. Just like you shared, I started to feel more in control and more energetic almost right away. After learning and learning for quite some time now, there is a lot that I do know. And constantly being distracted with emails about what I don't know wasn't doing me any good.

I love the quotations that you provided, especially the one from Coach John Wooden. Each day there are so many steps that I can be taking, and I already have so many great resources to access (including your book!).

I've heard the juggling analogy a few times lately and that seems to fit here as well...I don't now how to juggle, but if I were learning how to juggle I wouldn't start with 5 or 6 balls all at once. With my business, I am now approaching it as getting one strategy in place at a time (one ball)
, becoming really good at that strategy, and then adding another one after I'm solid on the first one.

Really appreciate that your post is a sign that I'm on the right track.

    Happy Thanksgiving to you.
  • So true!! I have a hard time putting things into action to begin with but when the overload starts that slows me down even more. Thanks for the reminder to stay clear!
  • Hi Kelly. You are spying on me right? :) I have been very guilty of this in the past but have managed to get off my duff more lately thanks to Blogging internship.

Sometimes it really helps just to have someone you trust come alongside and point you in the right direction when getting started. Trying to start internet marketing (or anything else for that matter) on your own can be very intimidating. I don't think people intend to get bogged down in details but with all the (sometimes conflicting) information flying at you, it is hard to know in which direction to step out and take that initial action.

Just making a decision and following one plan of action long enough to get results is probably one of the most challenging things to be done. I saw a little acronym once which is very applicable here. Follow one course until successful - FOCUS. :)

    Happy Thanksgiving
  • I'm thankful for this post and thankful for the invite to be a life time member of the MM"s site.I have pretty much been that person you are talking about in this post. I was signed up with a couple of business sites and don't get me wrong they were owned by wonderful people with very good information but I should have been focusing in other areas of learning. The worst part is I had no business joining these programs because I couldn't afford the monthly payments.Right now my business is offline with a "cookie cutter" site that I advertise in my newspaper ads and on my business cards. Sometime in the future I would like to be more of an online business and I'm sure my membership to Mom Masterminds will help me learn to do that step by step. Thank You
  • It was also a great cloud of confusion when I was starting out. There were loads of stuff to read and to educate myself about that I thought, "Will this ever end?" And I sometimes get more confused when I started applying what I read. Good enough, I found a mentor who so willingly taught me all about I needed to know. He really guided and helped me a lot in my success today.
  • Hi, just found your site. Great info. I sometimes get overwhelmed with IO! I'm new at all things computer and sometimes I just don't know WHAT I should be doing!
  • Hi! Just found your site. Great Stuff! I suffer from IO. I'm new at all things computer! Sometimes I just don't know what I should be doing!
  • When I read this blog I smiled - at last someone who understands me ! I really agree that there comes a point where you have so much information flying at you and around you that you can’t possibly assimilate it, let alone put it into action in any practical way. That's when I beat myself up, feel a failure and forget how far I've come ! I have also culled all my "insider" information gurus who overwhelm me and make me feel inadequate for what I'm not doing !!

Good down to earth common sense advice - GO GIRL !
