Are You Shooting For The Wrong Goal?

Anyone who knows me well knows that I’m not into sports.  I can get as stoked as the next person over the olympics, but that’s about it. Still,  sports can provide us with some pretty cool lessons.

Eight year old Lennie was really kicking butt on the ice in his first real game.  He was feeling so proud of himself as he wacked the puck straight into the goal – the goalie didn’t even have time to react!  Lennie through his arms up and whooped – only to hear everyone else howling in frustration and laughter.

You guessed it, Lennie shot for the wrong goal.

In his case, it all happened in a moment.  It’s easy for a child to get turned around on the ice and become confused about direction.

The same thing can happen to us.  So much is going on all the time.  So many opportunities, so much advice – it’s a lot to take in and digest.  If you’re not careful, you can get caught up in the moment – you head down the ice in the wrong direction and shoot for the wrong goal.

Ever happen to you?

What a funny story! But oh, so true! This has certainly happened to me. I think it's even more difficult for independent internet business owners because each of us has our own goals that we're aiming for. Unlike in sports where your whole team is aiming for the same thing. When you're working on your "own thing", it's easy to lose focus and shoot a goal, then realize "Oops! That's not what I wanted."
Just recently, I got something I thought I really wanted. Then, after I had it, I realized that I didn't actually want that. Other people wanted that - not me. (does that even make sense?) ;)
Still, I find it hard sometimes to evaluate things at times. Is this a good decision? Is this helping me towards my goal? Is there a clear cut answer?? Oh boy. You've opened a can of worms! ;)

Jen, the lack of a 'team' is part of the problem for sure! When we try to make decisions and plans in a bubble we're missing out on valuable opinions and insights from others.

I like your question, 'Is this helping me towards me goal?'

    What IS the goal?

For work at home moms it is usually to provide a reliable income while staying home.

So why do so many spend so much time chasing goals that have nothing to do with generating income?
  • Great post! I think this happens in life all the time.

Great analogy Kelly and a reminder for me to check in on my business plan. Usually when I "don't" want to pull it out it's because I'm amount to meander from the path.
  • Mmmmmm. Good thinking post!!! I know I've aimed at the wrong goal a time or two already. Thankfully I realized it and got back on track. Good question to ask yourself posted by PpcJen, "Is this helping me towards my goal?" when considering taking on a project or trying something new.
  • I know I've gotten off track, but this post got me to thinking. I hope that I'm not currently speeding toward the wrong goal. It feels right and I think my hesitation and procrastination are fear of success along with terror of lack of time to complete everything.
